The Victoria Falls Bridge

The Victoria Falls are Africa's largest waterfalls. They are one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World, they are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and they are without a doubt the region's most important tourist attraction, not only for Zimbabwe, but also for Zambia.

Another attraction is the historic steel bridge that connects Zimbabwe and Zambia across the Zambezi River. The bridge was commissioned in 1900 by Sir Cecil Rhodes, the British imperialist and businessman, and was completed in 1905. It was to become an important part of the planned “Cape-Cairo railway line” across Africa. Cecil Rhodes insisted that the bridge should be built in a location where train passengers could not only see the falls but also, if possible, feel the spray of the Victoria Falls. Today, more than a century later, the bridge is still in use and an important link between the two neighboring countries of Zimbabwe and Zambia, for road and rail transport.

In addition, this 128m high bridge is also the ideal starting point for various adrenaline-pumping adventure activities.

Bridge adventures at Victoria Falls

Shearwater is an activity provider from Victoria Falls that offers, among other things, various bridge adventures such as bungee jumping, the “Bridge Swing” or the “Victoria Falls Zip Line”.

All bridge activities take place on the Victoria Falls Bridge. To reach the Shearwater activity center in the middle of the bridge, you have to pass through customs coming from Victoria Falls or Livingstone with your passport. You have to state that you want to take part in the bridge activities and do not need a visa, but you are also not allowed to enter the opposite country. After clearing customs, you will be met at the Shearwater activity center.

Here at the Shearwater Activity Center there is also the small Bridge Café with a shaded terrace overlooking the bridge. Among other things, delicious burgers are served.

Bungee jumping at Victoria Falls

Bungee jumping at Victoria Falls is considered one of the ultimate activities for adrenaline addicts. Within the viewing range of the Victoria Falls and the turbulent waters of the Zambezi 128m below, the bungee jump at Victoria Falls is considered one of the most beautiful in the world and the adrenaline rush is guaranteed.

The 111m long bungee jump means a 4 second long, adrenaline-inducing free fall.

Participants must be at least 14 years old and weigh between 40kg and 140kg.

Photos and videos are taken of each jump and are available for purchase. Videos are US$ 55 each and photos are US$ 30 each. A combination of video and photos costs US$ 65.

Bridge swing under the Victoria Falls Bridge

Together with the bungee jump, the 'Bridge Swing' is a breathtaking, adrenaline-intensive experience of a special kind. A steel cable is stretched across the 316m wide gorge between Zambia and Zimbabwe, 120m above the turbulent waters of the Zambezi River. As if on an oversized swing and well secured by belts and ropes, the adventurer jumps into the depths and enjoys the free fall of around 70m, which turns into a 95m long 'pendulum swing'. During the bridge swing you have enough time to enjoy the view of the rocks of the gorge and the water below before you come to a standstill and are slowly pulled back up.

The minimum age of the participants is 14 years and the maximum weight is also 140 kg. There is the possibility of tandem swings.

Zip Line / “Bridge Slide” at the Vic Falls Bridge

Victoria Falls is not only the place with one of the most attractive bungee jumps in the world, but also has an exciting zip line to offer, the only zip line that crosses an international border, here from Zambia to Zimbabwe. The zip line is 425 meters long and is 128m above the turbulent waters of the Zambezi. The maximum speed that can be achieved with the zip line is 106 km/h. An adrenaline rush that is a little more relaxed than bridge swing or bungee jumping.

There are no age restrictions for participants. However, children and young people under the age of 16 may only be admitted together with an adult participant.
