Historical Bridge Tour Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls - Historical Bridge Tour

Less of an adrenaline rush but no less interesting and thrilling is the historical bridge tour. Travel in time through the last 120 years and learn more about this historical bridge, which was built between 1904 and 1905 and is now one of Victoria Falls most iconic landmarks.

You will be picked up by activity operator "Shearwater Victoria Falls" at your accommodation in Victoria Falls. If you stay in Livingstone. just let us know and we will arrange a transfer.

The Victoria Falls Historical Bridge Tour takes around 2,5 hours. A guide will share information on the difficulties building the bridge, which was prefabricated in England, shipped and railed to its present-day site at Victoria Falls. For its time it is an engineering masterpiece and an important piece in constructing the Cape-to-Kairo railway line.

Securely attached to a harness, visitors walk under the bridge, getting a good insight in its construction, and at the same time enjoying a fascinating view into the gorge and the Zambezi.

“Shearwater” provides videos and pictures of the trip at the end of the tour at an additional cost, which is definitely worth the purchase!

Information about the Victoria Falls Bridge

The historic Victoria Falls steel bridge connects Zimbabwe and Zambia across the Zambezi River. The bridge was commissioned in 1900 by Sir Cecil Rhodes, the British imperialist and businessman, and was completed in 1905. It was to become an important part of the planned “Cape-Cairo railway line” across Africa. Cecil Rhodes insisted that the bridge should be built in a location where train passengers could not only see the falls but also, if possible, feel the spray of the Victoria Falls. Today, more than a century later, the bridge is still in use and an important link between the two neighboring countries of Zimbabwe and Zambia, for road and rail transport.
